2010: SAN FRANCISCO “FUN WITH THE FELLAS”
-
DAY 1: BAY CITY ROLLERS
After a successful west coast Palooza in 2009, the boys run it back again—this time in San Francisco.
-
DAY 1: SAMMIES AT SALLY'S
After checking in, a skeleton crew of Paloozians (Al, Milo and Craig) make their way to the Anchor Steam Brewery tour. But first they grab a bite to eat at nearby Sally’s.
-
DAY 1: REPORTING BACK
Barely ten minutes into Palooza 2010 and the boys are already reporting dirt. Well, Al is anyway. Milo is probably just getting in a quick verbal golf lesson.
-
DAY 1: ANCHORS AWAY!
I’m not sure what a brewery is supposed to look like from the outside, but Anchor Steam Brewing definitely isn’t it.
-
DAY 1: 15 CENT BEERS?!?!
Sure they may have fought cholera, polio and scarlet fever while digging for gold back in the day, but those 49ers also could get 30 beers for under $5. Life was good back then.
-
DAY 1: READY FOR THE TOUR
Look at the guns on this guy. And the manly legs. And the menacing stare. And that friggin’ man purse? Come on!
-
DAY 1: TOUR GUIDE
The Paloozians are treated to a detailed explanation of how “steam beer” came to be from their animated guide.
-
DAY 1: I'M GONNA TELL YOU ANYWAY
The term comes from the beer’s original open fermentation process, where hot wort interacted with the cool air of San Francisco, creating visible plumes of steam. Now go off and impress your local bartender.
-
DAY 1: BEER TIME
Smalls carefully studies the beer guide in the samples bar.
-
DAY 1: MILO CONSIDERS BEER
Milo gives some careful thought as to whether he should finally join in on the fun and become a beer drinker.
-
DAY 1: MILO DRINKS BEER
After a lot of friendly encouragement (hazing), Milo gives in and orders a flight of Anchor Steam’s finest.
-
DAY 1: MILO REJECTS BEER
And that was the end of that noble journey.
-
DAY 2: OVER THE GOLDEN GATE
Having survived a night without their Paloozian hub (Sean), the boys wake up energized and ready to roll.
-
DAY 2: REDWOODS AT MUIR WOODS
The smallest-ever cluster of the best looking Paloozians gather outside Muir Woods before they venture on to check out some trees.
-
DAY 2: GREAT PLACE FOR A HIKE
Milo and Al make their way up the trail with their guide from the John Muir-founded Sierra Club.
-
DAY 2: NOW THAT'S A TREE
Some of these bad boys have been around since the middle ages. And speaking of middle ages, Al actually remembers the day this one was planted.
-
DAY 2: CRAIG SAVES
Smalls saves the Paloozians from certain death as a large redwood unexpectedly falls right over the trail.
-
DAY 2: REDWOOD STRESS CIRCLE
When a redwood dies, a new cluster of trees sprout around the base to utilize its nutrients, forming a circle. It’s kinda like when we split up Al’s booze in a few years.
-
DAY 2: SEANIE STRESS CIRCLE
The Paloozians form their own stress circle to lament their missing hub. But at least they know Sean is on his way.
-
DAY 2: BACK DOWN THE TRAIL
Milo and Al resist the urge to pee as they walk along a trickling brook on their way back down the mountain.
-
DAY 2: DEER SPOTTING
Milo leans over a bridge to get a shot of a young deer grazing on some leaves.
-
DAY 2: TEQUILA TIME
In a fitting tribute to the three early arriving Paloozians, the boys hit Tres Agaves for some tasty Mexican treats and tequila sampling.
-
DAY 2: SAMPLES
Sean is finally able to San Francisco and meet us there, so it was time for the serious tequila sampling to begin.
-
DAY 2: THE TEQUILA MASTER
Milo may not like beer but he does like tequila. Here’s our hero hitting his tequila flight.
-
DAY 2: AT&T PARK
The view outside AT& T Park and behind home plate. The Giants have an amazing stadium.
-
DAY 2: WILLIE MCCOVEY STATUE
The Giants have had a few great Willies (insert snicker) over the years—Mays and McCovey.
-
DAY 2: SHORT PORCH IN RIGHT
The Paloozians sit in the three-row arcade in right field, which is one of the best spots in the stadium.
-
DAY 2: BATTLE FOR HOMERS
If you look behind from the arcade, you’ll see the homer-hoping kayakers hanging out in McCovey Cove with their oversized nets ready to go.
-
DAY 2: ROBIN WILLIAMS
To start the playoffs, Robin Williams does a pre-game pep talk to fire up the team and the crowd.
-
DAY 2: THE FLYOVER
Milo gets the credit for this one. His shot is so tight you can see the bombs firing off.
-
DAY 2: BRIAN WILSON FANS
After first thinking that the Giants have a strong contingent of Hasidic Jews in their fanbase, the Paloozians realize the fans in fake beards are just pulling for reliever, Brian “The Beard” Wilson.
-
DAY 2: GAME TIME
Fired up on tequila, Milo and the Paloozians are ready for a little Giants playoff action against the Atlanta Braves.
-
DAY 2: THE FREAK
The best pitcher in baseball in 2010, Tim Lincecum is lights in route to a dominant 2-hit, 14-strikeout game winning performance.
-
DAY 2: GIANTS 3 - BRAVES 0
Sean celebrating the dominant win as the Giants go up 1-0 to start a run that will deliver their first-ever title since moving to San Francisco in 1958.
-
DAY 2: A LINCECUM STRIKEOUT
Sean commemorates the game by grabbing one of the outfield K’s to get a picture before we head out. The hometown crowd is not at all amused.
-
DAY 2: WHAT A PARK
One of the best of the new wave of baseball stadiums, AT&T is a great place to catch a game.
-
DAY 3: BREAKFAST & LATTES
Sean keeps a watchful eye on Al, who is wolfing down a hearty breakfast burrito before the Paloozians head to Napa for some wine tasting.
-
DAY 3: WINE COUNTRY REVERIE
This year’s small Palooza squad pauses for a brief moment of silence to honor the lapsed Paloozians.
-
DAY 3: NIEBAUM COPPOLA
Our first stop is Francis Ford Coppola's epic Rubicon Winery in Rutherford.
-
DAY 3: 1948 TUCKER
1 of just 50 produced by car designer Preston Tucker, a Tucker Torpedo is on display at Rubicon. Coppola directed the 1988 film “Tucker”.
-
DAY 3: RUBICON FOUNTAINS
Milo checks out the immaculate grounds at Rubicon and considers taking a quick dip.
-
DAY 3: STOMPING SEASON
At Grgich Hills (which was Ronald Reagan’s favorite winery), the boys spare America and decide not to participate in the grape stomping.
-
DAY 3: GRAPE JUICE ANYONE?
These vines make some pretty good wine.
-
DAY 3: PICKING HIS NEXT WINE
Luckily Grgich had these lovely reading spectacles so that Milo could read the fine print on the wines.
-
DAY 3: BREAD, CHEESE & MEAT
With two wineries in the books, the boys take a break to hit a deli and have lunch in a local park.
-
DAY 3: SEAN CUTS THE CHEESE
Nah, I think this is actually a sandwich. I just really like that headline.
-
DAY 3: VARIETY OF TREATS
The Paloozians dig into their European lunch.
-
DAY 3: JUST CHILLIN'
After lunch, the boys head over to check out Heitz Winery and meet this pooch getting some sun.
-
DAY 3: HEITZ GRAPES
Speaking of sunshine, these grapes are digging the perfect Northern California weather today.
-
DAY 3: DUCKHORN WINERY
Our final stop on the tour was Duckhorn, which makes some great wines.
-
DAY 3: LOTTA WINE
The Paloozians know that for a fact, as they tried just about all of them.
-
DAY 3: WINE TEETH
Milo’s cackle and purple teeth are all the evidence we need to verify that lots of wine was consumed.
-
DAY 3: NUFF SAID
This happens literally seconds into the ride back.
-
DAY 3: BAY SUNSET
The sun sets over the bay with the city on the left and the Golden Gate far off on the right.
-
DAY 3: KEROUAC'S HANGOUT
The Paloozians check out one of the most famous books stores in the world, City Lights Bookstore, where all the great beat poets used to hang out.
-
DAY 3: NORTH BEACH DINNER
Craig and Sean loiter outside of Tommaso’s before the Paloozians dig into some tasty pasta.
-
DAY 3: AL'S CHECKUP
After a long day of wine drinking, capped off with a huge plate of pasta, Al takes a break to have his heart checked by the esteemed Dr Banksy.
-
DAY 3: THE SALOON
With Al given a clean bill of health, the Paloozians head to The Saloon, which is not only the oldest continuously-running bar west of the Mississippi, but also the site of one Janis Joplin’s first gigs.
-
DAY 4: RIDING THE BART
Milo and Sean kick off day four by riding the BART to Berkeley for the Cal-UCLA game.
-
DAY 4: FARM TO BELLY
Instead of heavy tailgating, the boys official pass the rubicon between young and old by opting for a solid breakfast at Venus, one of the first farm-to-table restaurants in the country. A sad day indeed.
-
DAY 4: THE BEAR'S LAIR
But the Paloozians quickly make amends and hit the main bar on the UC Berkeley campus to meet Anhdai’s cousin, Danny Vu (who doesn’t show).
-
DAY 4: AMAZING CAMPUS
The UC Berkeley campus is another all-timer with lots of interesting building and tons of trees.
-
DAY 4: CAL'S MEMORIAL STADIUM
Memorial Stadium is on the edge of campus. It opened in 1923 and it has a great old timey feel.
-
DAY 4: CAL 35 - UCLA 7
The Bears punch Rick “The Weasel” Neuheisal’s timid Bruins in the mouth and put the game out of reach by the half. Future Bolt, Keenan Allen (in the slot at top) snags a TD for the home team.
-
DAY 4: IT'S OK TO SMILE, AL!
Al and Milo take a break from the heat to get some shade just outside the main seating area.
-
DAY 4: PERFECT DAY IN BERKELEY
A wide angle view of this classic old stadium.
-
DAY 4: DRINK, DINE & DASH
After the game, the boys head to the epically understaffed Raleigh’s Pub. After patiently waiting an hour for the bill, the Paloozians assume they had become invisible and just leave.
-
DAY 4: CHINATOWN
Later that night, the Paloozians mow down an insane amount of Chinese food at a place called something like Huey, Loui and Gooey in Chinatown. The dumplings are spectacular.
-
DAY 4: THE FAMED LEFTY'S
Craig doesn’t visit San Francisco without hitting Union Square gem, Lefty’s for an Anchor Steam.
-
DAY 4: INSIDE LEFTY'S
Founded by legendary 1930’s bay area baseball star, Lefty O’Doul, this bar is what shows up in the dictionary when you look up “urban bar”
-
DAY 4: CHEERS FROM LEFTY'S
The Paloozians enjoy a final round on their last night in San Francisco.
-
DAY 5: SERIOUS TAILGATING
Our last day of the Palooza is all about the Raiders game. As much as I despise the Faiders, their tailgating scene is pretty dense.
-
DAY 5: MORNING GAMES
Milo watching some of the morning games and praying for his Chupacabras squad.
-
DAY 5: SEAN'S BUDDIES
Sean gets ridiculed by some of the more theatrical fans for wearing a Giants cap to a Raiders game.
-
DAY 5: SACK LUNCH?
Nothing says Raiders fan like a severed head. Al Davis hasn't looked this good since the mid 70’s.
-
DAY 5: CRAZY COSTUMES
This guy’s outfit is impressive from hat to toe. And he even has a supply of stunt blood that he would squirt in his eye and mouth. Nice touch.
-
DAY 5: PRE-GAME BEVERAGES
Milo and Sean sit down to grab some refreshments before heading to their seats.
-
DAY 5: THE RAIDERETTES
The poor ladies who somehow got roped into cheering for this team decide to leave the field and hang with the more impressive Paloozians.
-
DAY 5: THRILLING ENTRANCE
In a captivating opening show, the rotting corpse that is Al Davis flew in to deliver the American flag.
-
DAY 5: RAIDERS 35 - CHARGERS 27
The Bolts kept things close behind 431 yards passing by Philip Rivers. But the Raiders were able to hold on late and get the win.
-
DAY 5: LIGHTS OUT
This game marks the final appearance of one the great Bolts of all time—Shaun Merriman, who gets cut by the Chargers the next day.
-
DAY 5: CHOCOLATE RUN
The Paloozians begin their annual post-palooza purge early by loading up on chocolates at the airport for their flight home. So long from SF!
